Who We Are
Crowning Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Detroit, Michigan, dedicated to uplifting, empowering, and equipping women and young girls who have experienced trauma, adversity, and systemic barriers.
We believe that every woman wears a crown, even if it has been cracked, tarnished, or overlooked, and we are here to help restore that crown with dignity, strength, and purpose
About the Founder
Executive Director, Latwaina Kelley – Crowning Detroit Inc.
Born and raised in the heart of Detroit, Latwaina Kelley is a living testimony of resilience, transformation, and purpose. Her journey is one marked by pain, perseverance, and powerful healing. Experiencing abandonment, abuse, sexual assault, and depression at an early age, Latwaina was forced to navigate life without the consistent guidance of a supportive adult. Raised by a single mother and becoming a parent at just 16 years old, she found herself fighting to break generational cycles while still discovering who she was.
Despite the odds, Latwaina didn’t give up—she rose. Every trial shaped her into a woman of strength, faith, and compassion. Her battles became the foundation for her mission: to empower others, especially women and youth, who feel unseen or silenced by life’s hardships.
As the Executive Director of Crowning Detroit Inc, Latwaina brings her lived experience to the forefront, creating a movement that reminds people: "Damaged crowns still shine." Through mentoring, community programs, and events that uplift and inspire, she is helping others find their voice, rebuild their confidence, and reclaim their power.
Latwaina Kelley is not just a survivor—she’s a builder of hope. A bestselling author, motivational speaker, and advocate for healing, she has dedicated her life to showing others that even after the darkest storms, you can still rise and wear your crown.
